Given for running costs by trustees, businesses or supporters.
Gift Aid
Some charities put the Gift Aid they claim towards costs. Ask whether yours does.
Trading or investments
A charity shop, rented property or interest on savings.
How to check the claim
- Open the accounts on the Charity Commission register.
- Find the fundraising and support costs. Someone still pays them.
- Read the notes for where that money came from.
- Still unsure? Ask: “Who pays your running costs, and is Gift Aid on my gift part of the 100%?”
Not the only sign of a good charity
Named gifts stay named: money given for a stated purpose must be spent on it. A charity without the policy is not worse; judge it by its honesty and reports, and give without reminders that spoil a gift (Quran 2:264).
